Mostly sunny skies and breezy southwesterly winds ahead of a slow moving cold front moving in from the west has kept air quality levels in the lower Code YELLOW range this afternoon. Cloud cover is expected to increase overnight as the front nears the Triad, with precipitation activity likely by early Tuesday morning. Skies are expected to remain generally cloudy throughout the day tomorrow as the frontal boundary stalls across the Triad, limiting solar radiation to lower ozone levels into the Code GREEN range. Particle pollution is also expected to drop slightly tomorrow, but periodic showers and storms should keep particulate matter concentrations elevated near the surface to allow for Code YELLOW AQI for particle pollution. The frontal boundary is expected to sag south of the Triad on Wednesday, but remain in close proximity with mostly cloudy skies to lower ozone pollution to Code GREEN. Particle pollution may also follow the downward trend of ozone on Wednesday, especially if the front clears further south of the Triad than anticipated. For now, the front will likely remain close enough to the Triad to not completely wash out particle pollution, so a precautionary Code YELLOW will be issued. By Thursday the front should retreat north as a warm front, likely elevating particle pollution into the lower Code YELLOW range. However, cloud cover will likely continue to limit solar radiation to keep ozone levels Code GREEN for Thursday. (Payne)
